Sharon
Saknit is a McGown certified teacher with over 75 hooked pieces to
her credit. Many of her creations can be seen in publications such
as The Rug Hooker’s Bible, Jessie Turbayne’s books Hooked on Rugs
& The Creative Hooker, as well as Celebrations. Her piece Color
Play was given a merit award at the 2007 Rhapsody in Rugs juried
exhibit at the Carnegie Center for the Arts. She teaches in her
home as well as at rug camps throughout the country. She is known
for her vibrant and unexpected use of color.
It all began as a chance encounter with a couple of rug hookers in
1993. She immediately fell in love with the art form and was
particularly drawn to the history of the craft. Her first piece
was a 4 cut shaded rose. Although the fine cut style suited her
taste early on she has since found her preference to be a 6 cut
impressionistic style.
Shortly after learning to hook Sharon moved with her family to
Northern California, which was void of rug hookers. After several
years of being self-taught and hooking alone she decided to start
teaching rug hooking at the local Community Education Center as a
way to create some hooking friends. Scared to death and feeling
ill equipped she started teaching her first class with great
success. The impact of the many women that walked through those
classroom doors over the years has been amazing.
Sharon has written two rug hooking related booklets, Color Diamond
a dye-by-eye guide and Tessellations a manual on understanding and
developing interlocking geometric patterns. Both were created from
the experience gained while developing and hooking many of her
favorite pieces.
Sharon currently lives in Washington State with her two cats, Otis
and Keko, and son Josh nearby. She is inspired by vibrant colors,
beautiful flowers, music and being with wonderfully talented
friends.
